Garmin Fenix 8: 47mm vs 51mm
The 51 mm Fenix 8 AMOLED has a wider, thicker case and longer rated battery life—not a bigger display. Both sizes list a 1.4-inch, 454 × 454 pixel screen.
What changes when you choose 51 mm?
The case is 4 mm wider and 0.9 mm thicker. Comparing the listed titanium versions with their bands, it is also 19 g heavier. The band attachment changes from 22 mm to 26 mm.
Start with 47 mm if reducing bulk is the priority. Investigate 51 mm if its longer battery ratings matter enough to justify the larger case. Neither choice follows automatically from wrist circumference.

How to compare a 47 mm and 51 mm watch on your wrist
The silicone ranges overlap from 127 to 208 mm. That means both listed bands cover those circumferences; it does not mean both cases sit equally well. The extra width, lug shape, strap bend and thickness can matter even when either band fastens.
- Measure first. Follow the wrist-measurement steps, then check the exact strap’s range.
- Compare with the same posture. In person, look straight down at each watch, then bend your wrist and check the side profile and sleeve clearance. Do not judge diameter from unrelated close-up photos.
- Check adjustment and stability. Try the actual band rather than assuming a tighter hole fixes case overhang. A 22 mm band and 26 mm band are not interchangeable.
If both cases seem too large, the original 43 mm Fenix 8 AMOLED is another size to investigate. It is not simply the 47 mm watch with a shorter band; compare its own specifications and the small-wrist checklist.
Battery is the main specification tradeoff
Garmin rates the 47 mm at up to 16 days in smartwatch mode and the 51 mm at up to 29 days. With always-on display, those ratings become 7 and 13 days. The larger case does not buy a larger listed screen here.
Use the same mode on both sides: the GPS Only figures are not multi-band figures. Brightness, music, satellite settings and actual usage affect runtime. These are manufacturer estimates, not measured endurance or a guarantee for a particular event.
Common Fenix 8 size questions
Does the 51 mm have a bigger screen?
Not in this original AMOLED comparison. Both list 1.4 inches, 35.56 mm across the display and 454 × 454 pixels. The outer cases are different sizes.
Is 51 mm too big for a 160 mm wrist?
160 mm is inside both listed silicone-band ranges. It is not proof of comfortable fit: check the physical case and lugs on the top of your wrist. This is a range example, not a photograph or test on a 160 mm wrist.
